An R, an L and a goalie stick, in one mark

Rob Lancit is a franchise executive, an author and a hockey goalie. He had no logo at all. The brand started from his book: ROB LANCIT set in one tall condensed weight, the look of the cover. The icon took thirty-two rounds in three days, and it ended up holding three things at once.

How Digilu makes a brand

The same six rules on every identity. Below them, the rounds that mattered for Rob Lancit: not every round, the ones that changed the direction.

  1. Start from what they ownReferences first: the logo they have, the sketch on a napkin, the board somebody likes. The first drawing stays close to it.
  2. Every round is publishedEach round goes on the client’s Brand page the day it is ready, newest first, with what changed and why.
  3. Every mark carries an ideaNo six weights of the same drawing. Each option shown is a different idea or a fix somebody asked for.
  4. Small sizes get their own drawingA browser tab is 16 pixels. The mark is redrawn for 16, 32, full size and the phone home screen, never just shrunk.
  5. The lock becomes a systemLockups, one color, reversed, an embroidery cut, favicons, social images, guidelines and a download kit, all generated from the locked drawing.
  6. Nothing is thrown awayRounds that lose are archived with the reason. The client can always see how the mark got where it is.

Start from who he is

The first round took everything true about Rob as a starting point: Canada, the book, sales, his son and daughter, the goalie. The strongest early idea was the maple leaf, cut out of the wordmark’s own R. It was good. It was not him yet.

New rule: the idea lives in the white

Sticks added on top of letters looked like stickers. So the brief changed: the mark has to use negative space to do something, the way the FedEx arrow lives between two letters. From here every idea is carved out of solid black, never drawn on top.

Draw close to the reference

Mike brought a reference: a heavy RL cut apart by one white hockey stick. Then he made his own image of it at 3:48 in the morning. It was traced exactly, and the work moved in small, literal steps from there: move the L, open the top, nothing else.

Stop changing the font

The note that reset everything: the letters are Rob’s font and they do not move. Round 21 changed zero pixels of either letter. The stick is only the white between them, and the only control is how close the L sits. The tighter it sits, the more hidden the stick.

Turn the L upside down

The breakthrough: an R’s stem plus a bar across the top is an L turned upside down. Draw that L as a real goalie stick, blade at the top, heel curving under it, handle running down to the baseline, and one letter holds the R, the L and the stick.

Round 31, locked

The top bar overhangs left like the wordmark’s own R, every corner has the same small radius except the stick’s heel and its two tips, and the icon sits centered above ROB LANCIT as the primary identity. It is on roblancit.com, the browser tab, the phone home screen and every share card.
